Hey!!!! Guess what!!! I have a new blog!!!!

Yeah, I'm not even kidding, it is so exciting. I have been thinking about doing this for a while now but in the midst of growing businesses, I am just now getting it completed. I imagine that there will be several tweaks & updates I need to make as it grows, but for now, I am ready for you to see it. And, I already posted my first entry. Instead of me rambling on & on about it, why don't you see for yourself.

PartnerCon Friends & Review, Part 1

Two weeks ago to this day I was in New Orleans at Pictage's PartnerCon. It was great to be back in NOLA though I had not visited since my mom lived there & lost most of her possessions due to Katrina. And honestly, I was a bit nervous going into the conference because I didn't know anyone. There were several people there that I knew their work & was really hoping to meet but was uncertain about how it was going to play out.

So... I arrive at my hotel room, unload a few things & head on over to the hotel & conference center for a 'mixer.' As soon as I walked in the lobby I noticed Melissa Jill; I have been following her blog/work for a few years. I thought to myself, "Are you kidding me? I was so hoping I would get to meet Melissa... of all the people I wanted to meet... now I'm all nervous... this is crazy! Why am I nervous? Dang! What's wrong with me, am I in 6th grade again? Ahhh, who cares, I am going to introduce myself... here goes!"

I walked over & introduced myself to Melissa & one of her roomies, Jennifer Keim. They were so warm as we briefly chatted & next thing you know, I am off to dinner with them! I was so thankful for that first evening; it welcomed me to what would be an incredible few days.

Now... the goal of this post is to introduce you to & highlight some of my new friends from New Orleans & share a few photos from my trip. I don't have pics of everyone as I was too busy learnin' but I managed to find a few.

Melissa Jill @melissajill: Melissa Jill Hester became such a good friend almost immediately. Beyond her photography, which we all know is amazing, she is wonderful & a great pleasure to be around. Prior, I was a big fan of her photography; now, I am a big fan of her person. We hung out throughout the week & I am so glad to have a new friend in Melissa. Despite my not knowing anyone at the conference, she said "you walk around here like you own this place!" My response, "uh, yeah I do!" Her stomping ground is the beautiful Phoenix, AZ.

Rhonda Danner @rhondadanner: Rhonda & I have so much in common given both our backgrounds in music & worship leading. She plays the guitar... yeah! We have a friendly competition brewing as to who can be the first to host Melissa Jill's 2-day workshop. Although I love Greenville, I am thinking that East TN is the perfect fit. Her work is based out of Greenville, SC. Rhonda snapped this pic as I was mimicking the mime; Lauren Dennard put me up to it & as I moved in close, the mime moved forward as though he would kiss me. I was sweatin.'

Jennifer Keim @jenniferkeim: I met Jennifer the first night in New Orleans & the rest is history. Jennifer made for great company as we roamed the streets of the French Quarter photographing everything that moved. We soon realized we both have two boys; she says it is the only way to go! Jennifer is based out of Marysville, WA.

Erin O'Neil @erinoneil: Erin approached PartnerCon after having run a 1/2 marathon a few days prior, which she attributes to a "momentary lapse of sanity." She was a pleasure to get to know & is quickly in route to defining her style as a photographer. Erin is also based out of Greenville, SC.

The Gotchers @ryangotcher, @denisegotcher: Ryan & Denise Gotcher are such a great couple to be around & are very sharp behind the lens. They are the dynamic duo behind Simply Knot Photography in the Phoenix, AZ region. They took me up on my suggestion that they must visit Preservation Hall for an evening of smooth jazz; apparently it was a big hit for them both! Yeah!

Cassie Jacklin @cassiejacklin: Located in the great land o' Canada is photographer Cassie Jacklin. Cassie was kind enough to let me join the table the first night at Emeril Lagasse's restaurant NOLA. I don't recall ever seeing her without a smile on her face.

Laura Parker @laura__parker & Lauren Dennard (I'm still trying to get Lauren to Twitter!): Based out of the Dallas/Plano, TX region is Laura Parker Photography & Fairy Tale Photography. Laura is quite the busy lady, shooting along with Lauren Dennard, around 95 weddings a year. Wow! They were such a joy to be around & I loved getting to know them both. They are shooting a big wedding coming up for Melissa Rycroft from the Bachelor! That'll be fun... I'm slightly jealous!

Mary Margaret Chambliss: Mary Margaret is a fellow southerner based out of the close-to-home Birmingham, AL. We met one morning as we were walking to the conference from our hotels. Apparently, we were the only ones not staying at the hotel/conference center because we are in rebellion. She is super-cool & is launching her photography biz full-time after being a photographer for Southern Living.

Abbie Rufener: Abbie is such a sweetheart; her & her husband are currently calling Nashville home as he pursues studies at Vanderbilt. Yeah, he must be smart. Abbie had to leave the conference early due to being sick but I am for sure planning on meeting up with her family sometime in Nashville.

Alec Vanderboom @alecmv: I had to mention Alec although we only talked a few times briefly. I met Alec as we were going separate ways on the escalator & he yelled, "Ben Finch," & held out his hand for a big high-5. I enthusiastically responded with a high-5. Let me assure you that you will hear more of Alec in the future; his work is phenomenal & his modern/retro style is well-defined. I'm a big fan!

Shawn Reeder @shawnreeder: I only met Shawn briefly but his work, landscape especially, is too amazing not to show others. I found Shawn to be humble & inspiring. I've already talked to him about bringing our guitars next year & playing some blues in Jackson Square (he is quite a talented musician as well).

8 Kids = Party in the studio!

As the title says, 8 kids is a riot! Last Sunday, November 5 I did a portrait session for 8 kids, all of which but one were under the age of 4 except one. They are: Matthew, Hunter, Madison, Abbigail, Chase, Sienna, Hudson, & Lilli.

What happens when all of these kiddos come into the studio? Well... it was certainly a wild night.

We began playing around in the floor trying to ease the anxiety kids sometimes get when getting their picture taken. All was well so it led us to strategically position the kids for a group portrait. Yeah, that part wasn't quite as smooth as the kiddos had caught onto our plan & decided to launch a rebellion against the adults. We responded with lollipops but our counter-attack was futile. I managed to capture a few suitable images before I called an audible & started taking pics of them individually. See the results for yourself, enjoy! Isaac & Ashley's Wedding Photos

On Saturday I had the opportunity to shoot the wedding of Isaac & Ashley. If you recall, in August I had the opportunity to shoot their engagement session (click here to check it out) which was a blast. They are such a great couple & it is priceless to see their eyes light up when they see one another.

The wedding was wonderful. I had the super talented Ashley Hodgson as my associate photographer (check out her blog here). The day began at Ashley's parents' home where we got plenty of detail/preparation shots & a few bridal party portraits. It was then that I exclaimed to the bride how incredible her flowers were. She proceeded to inform me that she did them herself in addition to designing & making her cake. "Dang! That girl is good," I said. I then digressed & spent the next few moments trying to talk her into starting her own floral business.

The following are some of my initial favorites from the shoot that I wanted to share with my readers. Again, thank you & congratulations Isaac & Ashley (& your families) for your trust & allowing me the opportunity to document this special occasion. You guys are great!

I think Madison is used to me photographing her by now... I believe I have done 4 or 5 shoots with her. She is a beautiful little girl. I hope to keep photographing her all the way up to her wedding day & beyond... a long time from now. Her dad, Brandon, was one of my best friends growing up; he was like a brother to me. Now... he literally is family to me as a result of my sister, Amy, marrying his brother, Travis. Brandon married Ashley several years ago & I had the privilege to sing/play guitar in their wedding. Fast forward several years as we now spend our time chasing little bare feet around our houses.

This year Ashley contacted me to do a fun family portrait as well as pics of Madison for their Christmas card. It was great fun.

Fun Day in the Leaves

Prior to my trip to NOLA (more on NOLA & Pictage PartnerCon to come this week), it was my pleasure to photograph several kiddos on a Thursday afternoon in my front yard. My sister, Amy, & two of her friends, Kerri DeBusk & Dana Tumlin, scheduled a fun/candid portrait session for all their children: Hunter & Chase McDonald, Isaac & Grace DeBusk, & Jason Tumlin (my son Brennan managed to get in on the fun too). When we considered locations for the shoot, we decided that my front yard would be the perfect place for the kids to jump in the leaves, swing on the rope swing, & run around the yard. Alison Nation Maternity

Meet my good friends Don & Alison Nation. When we found out that they were pregnant, Joy & I were thrilled. I couldn't wait to do Alison's maternity & newborn photos. Alison is an incredible graphic artist who works with our marketing & design company, The Visible Group (in addition, she is becoming a very good photographer & has been a 2nd shooter for several of my shoots). Don patrols the city as an police officer for the APD (I think he just likes to wear the uniform). They are such a fun couple to be around & I'm pretty sure we laughed during the entire shoot. This was especially the case when Don began his Zoolander poses. And, Alison proved herself to be a rookie when it came to blowing bubbles but we finally got some good ones after Don coached her!
The Fall weather was incredible & we took advantage of the colorful leaves that served as a blanket on the ground. I couldn't have asked for a better time shooting; it was a great reminder of why I do what I do. Thanks Don & Alison!!!

Frederick & Angela Hurt Wedding

Ladies & Gentlemen... may I introduce you to Frederick & Angela Hurt. I was privileged to shoot the wedding for the new couple this past weekend & had a great time. Frederick & Angela are both high school basketball coaches & were introduced to one another on a trip to Disney World where their teams were competing in a tourney. Apparently the girls on Angela's b-ball team saw a good-looking (& single) men's coach (Frederick) that they thought needed to be introduced to their coach. Supposedly, the rest is history. The relationship began & Frederick moved to Atlanta, got a job coaching at the same high-school, & now Angela Anderson is Mrs. Frederick Hurt. Wow! Awesome story huh?!

The ceremony took place at First Baptist Sweetwater last Saturday & we ended up at Springbrook Golf & Country Club for the reception. And I will go ahead & tell you up front... these folks like to dance. And when I say dance, I mean DANCE! My friend & D.J., Nick Penley of Penhead Entertainment, provided tasteful jams for the entire evening (you should definitely have him at your reception)! It was a riot!

Angela Anderson Bridal Portraits

What a great way to end last week!!! I spent Friday afternoon with Angela Anderson & her mother, Sue, for Angela's bridal session. Angela & her fiance are teachers & basketball coaches in Fulton County, GA. The wedding is this next weekend so I had Angela meet at the studio for some 'traditional' bridal portraits. If you know me well & follow my style, you know I am always eager to get outside in natural light. Plus, I was really curious if the weather would cooperate. But... I went ahead & setup the studio to start the session. I was able to capture some great pics from this time although I am still bitter because Angela said I looked like "Ben Stiller prancing around." In rebuttal I thought to myself, "I am so much cooler than Ben Stiller." Oh well. Here are some from the studio session (Click on the images for a full-size pic):

So... after our studio work I arranged to head out to Tsali Notch Estate Vineyards (btw: Tennessee's largest vineyard!). My marketing & design company, The Visible Group, was hired by Tsali Notch to design their corporate identity (speaking of, we are in the process of designing labels for their jellies & wine bottles... going to be incredible). We were met by some rain on the drive out to the vineyard but things cleared up by the time we were ready to shoot. Plus, overcast skies are quite excellent for lighting & you ought to see this place... absolutely beautiful.

Feels Like I'm Going Nowhere

The other day I was in Mobile, AL working on a few projects for the University of Mobile & I ventured to the Mobile Causeway (btw, one of my favorite places for inspiration). I was setting up for some sunset shots of the downtown Mobile skyline when I happened upon this pier. It looked like it was going, rather, leading nowhere. It reminded me of all my days I've spent anxious/uncertain about the future... with little reason. It reminds me of a quote from Brennan Manning, "Whatever God does not protect you from, He will use to perfect you through."

Today I was finishing up some editing for various clients when I ran across this pic; I love how it leads me to dream & inspiration. Hopefully I won't get reprimanded by Shane & Shane's or Phillip Larue's management team for posting these pics... but I couldn't help but post some pics I shot at a recent Shane & Shane w/Phillip Larue concert hosted by Contact Helpline, under the direction of executive director Scott Packett. Contact hosted the concert to raise awareness of their ministry. Contact's mission statement reads, "Offering hope by means of active listening to a community in need of being heard." Scott hired The Visible Group to do the designing & printing of the concert posters as well as some t-shirts for their volunteers... which looked killer by the way; see for yourself! I took my camera to the concert to capture images from the night so that I could share with Contact. Actually... I'm also waiting for the call from Third Coast Artist Agency to hire me to be the official concert photographer... ring, ring!

Phillip Larue opened the concert with some seriously good music from his album, "Let the Road Pave Itself." He has a soulfoul/sincere/humble presence in his music that is absolutely refreshing. Check out his music here.

Shane & Shane further blew us away with their steady ability to sound exactly like they do in their recordings. I have seen them in concert several times & can't help but smile like a kid at the circus through the whole show; they are phenomenal. I rarely go a week without listening to their music. Ava & Nora Jackson

Ava (big sis) & Nora (lil' sis) are the beautiful, brown-eyed girls of some of my favorite people in the world... Kevin & Lena Jackson. Kevin (affectionately known as Jax) was one of my roommates in college at the University of Mobile. He, along with my other roomies at the time lived in the infinitely famous (at least in our own minds) Cottage 7C (it was quite famous at the time, I promise!). He & Lena met in college & I remember many of nights as the two were merely taking the first few steps in their relationship.It was quite fun! In fact, I think I remember being a part of them being together... hmmmm.

I will always consider Jax one of my dearest friends & although we don't see each other often... I feel like we can just pick up where we left off. He has a rather uncanny ability to make you feel accepted & appreciated... quite a wonderful gift! I have dozens upon dozens of memories of us in the cottage late at night discussing theology/philosophy/history/etc., or on the soccer field, at a Chinese restaurant called 'Happy China', at Lena's parents' house for Sunday lunch, & several other locations that Parker talked us into going which I cannot adequately describe. Plus, when Jax's parents came into town, it felt like Christmas as they would always bring great things for all 'the boys' to enjoy. They were like 2nd parents (speaking of... why haven't they come & visited me lately... I'm gonna have to have a word with them!).

Okay... enough of the banter (although it brings up some fun memories). I was down in Mobile, AL for a shoot at the University & was able to squeeze in some time with Lena & the girls on Wednesday morning before our departure. It was great to visit with Lena & to see her gorgeous two, Ava & Nora. Btw... Ava looks just like Kevin (but in girl form of course!). I had a blast & was so thankful to get to photograph for a family I care so much for. So... here are some of my initial favorites! Be sure to click on the image to see the pic in high res.

Mobile, AL Favs

I wanted to show you (my peeps) some of my photo favorites from my recent trip to Mobile, AL, for a 3-day shoot for The University of Mobile. The goal of the project was to take images that would reflect the University's culture so that we could use them in the design of their new site which will replace the current site at http://www.umobile.edu. Cover Designs Submitted for Rick Warren's New Book

For several days now I have been meaning to tell everyone that I jumped at the opportunity to submit a cover design for Pastor Rick Warren's new book, The Hope You Need. Rick Warren decided to use 99 Designs to host a cover design contest open to the public. As you may imagine, this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone... especially for those of us who have been highly influenced by Pastor Warren. I found out about the contest 1.5 days before the contest end, so I rushed like crazy to submit some of my artwork & photography. And I really tried to be conservative in my design trying to design with my client in mind. I am really interested in seeing how this contest turns out due to the submission requirements & the sheer number of entries... 3189 at submission end. In particular to the contest rules was that no stock photography could be used, only original artwork & photography. I am not sure how they will be able to sort through the stock photos but we will wait & see. But from my end, I thought it was a wonderful way to showcase some of my photos that I thought would make great book cover designs. Can you imagine being able to see one of your photos on the cover? Free Textures!!!

For all you creative types, I thought it was about time to give you something to spur a little inspiration. Maybe this will become a weekly thing... in that case, I need a name like Texture Thursday or Tadow! Tuesday... ah... nevermind, I'm not feelin' the name thing.

If you are a photographer or a graphic designer (or if you just love textures), I am certain you will enjoy having these to use on your next project. Some of them with a bit of cropping could be patterned or tileable (is that even a word?). Benjamin Knox Finch

Everyone... I would like you to meet Benjamin Knox Finch. Knox, everyone.

Knox is our second child born on August 25, 2009 at 9:35 pm weighing a whopping 8.1 lbs at 20.5 inches. We are loving our new little guy & I think he is adjusting into the family quite well. I have been asked dozens of times about the name 'Knox' & why we chose it. When we started thinking about boy names, Joy mentioned she really wanted to use the name Benjamin. Sounds good, I am partial to the name! But we couldn't settle on a middle name. As I thought about it further I considered naming him after someone from the Reformation... guys like Martin Luther, John Calvin, etc. who have had a profound impact upon my life. Then, I thought about the life of John Knox who was heavily influenced by Calvin & later formed the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. Then, I considered that it means "of the hills" & it seemed fitting since we attend church & closely associated with Knoxville, TN. On top of that, I think it just sounds cool. There you have it!

Let me tell you a few things we know about Knox (although all but #5 is subject to change in a week):

Knox doesn't waste much time. Where Brennan took around 20 minutes to nurse, Knox is in & out in 5 minutes max.
Knox can sleep no matter what/when/where. Regardless if the dog is barking (quite often), Brennan is yelling (quite often), doorbells are ringing (quite often), people are talking (quite often), it doesn't matter much to Knox... he is going to sleep in spite of circumstances.
Knox is the loudest sleeper I have ever heard... as a baby of course. He sleeps great but man is he loud. He grunts, groans, yells, laughs, etc. all night long. I think it is his way of paying us back for having to sleep under loud conditions during the daytime.
Knox smiles often & seems very content.
Knox has a tremendous amount of people in his life who love, support, & pray for him daily. We will teach him to not take this for granted & to thank God for such grace.

THE Chair: One Man's Crusade to Own the World's Coolest Chair... EVER!

Warning: You are about to view one of the world's coolest chairs; you may experience feelings of envy!

So...here's the shake down. Several weeks ago I was out on a leisurely drive through the hills of the Cherokee National Forest accompanied only by my camera. I wasn't having much luck with the photography... for example, my favorite image from the day was of a lawn-mower racing sign that I found hilarious (you read it right... lawn-mower racing! Can you imagine going 65 mph on a lawn-mower? I mean, I have a need for speed, but not on a lawn-mower... I digressed, sorry!).

So I did what any good, inconvenienced citizen would do, I gave up!

I then parked my car & went into an antique store. When all else fails to inspire you... visit a place that has lots of rare vintage items; always works for me. As I strolled through the store, I happened to notice a colorful & magnificent chair in the corner. I did a double-take & thought to myself, "Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is that the coolest chair I've ever seen?" Immediately, I felt an urge to own it yet there was a piece of paper taped to the chair, "Layaway." I thought, "Are you kidding me? How expensive is this bad-boy that someone would have to put it in layaway?" I next plotted the quickest route to the cash register & asked the lady how much "that awesome chair" in the back cost.

She asked, "The really cool retro green one that is on layaway? We've had so many people ask about that chair. It wasn't in here a day or two before the lady put it in layaway."

"Yes, that's the chair I'm talking about" I responded but thinking to myself, "thanks for rubbing it in!"

Then she told me how much it cost. I had two thoughts: 1. Why in the world would somebody put a chair on layaway for the same price it costs to eat at Applebees? 2. I have to find a way to get that chair despite that it is on layaway.

So... I quickly asked her if she would consider selling it to someone who has cash. But she said no. "Are you sure, I have a twenty in my wallet?" (What can I say... I'm a baller!). Again, no.

I left the antique store bummed. "Shucks!"

Fast-forward several weeks. This past Monday (Labor Day), I took the family back to that same area for lunch & to stroll through the shops. After lunch we went back into the same store. I had already warned Joy that I was bitter & that it may not be a good idea... but we went anyways. As we turned the corner in the store to where the chair was previously, I was shocked. "Joy, there it is! That's the chair I was telling you about."

"Ben, that is the ugliest chair I have ever seen." Joy responded inappropriately.

"Joy, you are just blinded by its awesomeness; that chair rocks!" I rebutted. "Geeze, it still has the layaway sticker on it. I can't believe it, I am talking to whoever is in charge."

I moved forward to the front of the shop & said to the lady, "Wow, that chair is still on layaway. What are my chances of buying it?"

"Sir, I can't sell the chair but I'd be glad to put your name down in case the lady doesn't want it anymore."

As I was about to write down my contact info another lady (owner of the store) walked in & the woman behind the counter told her that I wanted to buy the chair. She simply said, "Sell it to him. The lady has had the chair on layaway for over 2 months, she should've picked it up by now."

"YES! That's exactly what I was thinking!" I said.

Joy responded, "Buy the chair but it isn't going in our house."

"That's okay, me & my chair will do just fine at the studio," I gleefully said.

Needless to say... I got the chair!!! It is lookin' good in the studio. Check it out for yourself but be sure to click on the picture to see a larger version of the world's coolest chair.

Our newest member of the family, Benjamin Knox Finch, arrived on Tuesday [8/25] at 9:35 pm weighing 8.1 lbs & 20.5 inches long. Joy had such a pleasant experience during delivery & is recovering quite nicely. We had wonderful support from family/friends & are very thankful for all the love directed towards us. We were able to leave the hospital last night around 7 pm & introduce Knox to his new home. Our dog Bailey greeted him with a warm kiss & Brennan was super-excited to see his lil' bro. Now we are taking time to rest, enjoy hot potato soup, & be thankful. Living the dream!

I will never forget when I met Ashley for the first time. She made contact with me via my website & I followed up with her, asking if she would want to stop by the studio to meet. She stopped in for our meeting & I could tell that she was seeing if I could meet her wedding photography expectations. This is always a bit intimidating for me as I have no idea how I will measure up to a bride's expectations which can be enormous. It was funny when she said, "I knew I loved your photography, the real reason I wanted to meet with you is to see if I liked you. Well, I like you. You're hired." Whew!!

Fast forward.

I met Ashley & Isaac Friday night for their engagement shoot. Isaac's family lives on a ridge that has a wonderful view. I whispered to God, "You keep hooking me up with client's who have incredible places for photography! You make me look better than I really am." Anyways, we had a great time together & I tried to make them feel at ease (which was no problem because when they are around each other, they are so comfortable). After about an hour at Isaac's farm, we headed to Midway Drive-in in Athens. (By the way... Isaac & his dad have a smokin' '69 Mustang... you will see it in a few pics). The drive-in thing, I didn't think through very well; it is quite difficult to shoot at a drive-in due to minimal lighting. But, we did manage a few good shots before being politely reprimanded for using flash photography. Which, by the way, when my flash fired, it lit up the whole place. I thought to myself, "I am such a photographic rebel. Rock n' Roll!" Well... enough of the rambling, here are some of my initial favorites from our shoot. I would love to hear your comments!

I was able to shoot Allyssa's maternity photos several weeks ago & now we are planning Ayden's newborn sessions. Joy, Brennan, & I went by the hospital the day after Ayden was born & I was able to get a few quick shots of the little man. If you think you have the best job in the world, I may have to disagree (I might even fight you over it... well maybe not, but I am known to deliver one swift kick!!). Back to the point. Although it has been only a matter of months since I decided to jump right in & pursue my two businesses full time, I am overwhelmed with joy. I am not even kidding, I love what I do. I told my wife, "If we can eat & pay the bills by this, I am ecstatic!"

This past weekend I was able to photograph the wedding of Jake & Loren Simmons. I always get butterflies in my stomach just before a wedding (or any shoot for that matter) & I ask Joy, "Do you think I am a good photographer? Or, do people just hire me because they are confused!" She gives me the look, "Are you kidding me?" I think she believes I am just searching for words of affirmation. Maybe I am at times, but often, I am as serious as can be.

As I finished Phase 1 of editing Jake & Loren's pics, I couldn't help but wear a big cheesy grin. Whether anyone else loves these pics or not, I do. I feel like they represent my style... my perspective... my creativity. And that, is very fulfilling.

But, before I post some of my favorites, I want you to know what I believe was the most important aspect of this wedding, their marriage. Specifically, how it gives glory to God. Although I make a portion of my living from wedding photography, I don't believe that a ceremony is what is most important. I think we are often mistaken about marriage & fail to realize that it is intended to be a portrait of God's love for His church... His bride. As much as I love to photograph a beautiful bride... I still believe the day isn't about her... rather, it is about Jesus. Jake & Loren love Jesus. Their church loves Jesus. And this, is what made this wedding so special & it is what will make their marriage unique.

The Finch Family Hike

Joy, Brennan & I went on a hike on Saturday at Gee Creek in Delano, TN. We had a great time. I kind of think that the few people who saw us coming down the trail were like, "What in the world are those guys thinking?" Here Joy is almost 8 months pregnant & Brennan was on my back in a hiking backpack; it was great!!! There were a few times where we had to do basic rock climbing which was a challenge trying to figure out how to do so with 30 + lbs on your back. But, we managed quite well & it made a great memory!
It was preceded by a trip to the Amish Farmer's Market where we got one of the finest watermelons ever grown. God bless the Amish!!!

Hey everyone!!! I have totally been slacking in the discipline of blogging. But, I have very good reason to post today as I finished up editing pics from my shoot with Scott & Allyssa Packett who are expecting their first child anytime now.

Scott has been a close friend of mine for several years now & is doing an incredible job as a pastor at Idlewild Baptist Church. I have personally witnessed the Lord's work in his life as he has literally transformed. He is also the lead of the non-profit organization, Contact, Inc., for our area. As if Scott didn't have tough jobs, Allyssa has been in social work for several years.

I take great privilege in getting to take photos of Scott & his lovely wife Allyssa. Thanks!!!

Inspire Guide

Well... I have to admit it: I am excited like a 7th grade schoolgirl! That is pretty darn excited if you ask me.

Here's the scoop: my creative juices were flowing when I stumbled upon a blog (Design Aglow) who had done a similar project helping clients see what their portraits would look like displayed in different areas within their home. I immediately went to work & created the "Inspire Guide." It hosts 25 portrait display designs for your home. I designed the different environments so that each display would work in various areas throughout your home or business. You can get an idea of what I am talking about by clicking on the images below. The guide lists both the print sizes needed to complete the design as well as my print prices.

I have already seen a great response from people I have shown, from interior designers, business owners, moms, artists, clients, etc. Several have asked if they could purchase a guide & my response is "Heck yes!" They are 5x7 cards printed on a heavy, UV & pearl coated card-stock, bound with a nickel circle clip. It will blow your mind how professional they look. I designed them to be extra durable so that you could have them for a long...long...long time. You can purchase them from me for $35.

Her husband, Stan, is the Athletic Director & Women's Golf Coach at Tennessee Wesleyan College. The Green Gecko

Although I will spare you the events of how our vacation went awry (for details, read here), I thought I would share some of my favorite pictures. The house we rented, The Green Gecko (side note: if you read the link above you will understand why we found it ironic that the green gecko was painted puke-green), was situated on a beautiful wildlife preserve on the beach. I managed to get a few good pics during the 1st day while it wasn't raining.

So... as I told you in my "appetizer," RJ & Jessica's wedding was incredible. Leading up to the wedding we were all in doubt about the weather. Weather.com was saying 90% chance of precipitation pretty much all day Saturday. The potential problem was figuring out how Jessica & RJ were going to get married out on a dock in the pond. I was thinking, "Well, this is going to officially be my first wedding shoot in the rain." But... the sun prevailed & broke through the clouds. I couldn't help but think that God was hookin' us up. It turned out to be a beautiful day to take pictures & I cannot believe how perfect it was for lighting. What do you think? (click on any image to enlarge it!)

Yesterday was a trip! I started off the day at Prospect Elementary School in Cleveland speaking to the 5th grade classes about photography. I had the students stage some action shots & we laughed alot! Plus, I answered questions, the most popular being, "Have you ever take pics of anyone famous?" I tried to tell them that I was famous but they didn't believe me. I know... kids just don't understand. But, I did get to show them some pics of Tiger Woods that I had taken at the Masters this year; they were impressed.

Then, at 3:30 pm, Grace & her mom, Kerri, came by the studios yesterday for a studio session. We had a great time running all around the studio. But... I did manage to capture some really great pictures that characterize Grace's personality. Grace runs on a full tank of gas! Or at least she did yesterday. But, I think she likes me. I have a friend I would like to help; I would also like your help (if you want to help). Allison White has become a dear friend to Joy & I. She works full-time at Camp Living Stones (www.camplivingstones.com). This summer she is traveling to Benin, Africa with an NGO called Unseen Stories, for the purpose of educating people throughout the entire country about child trafficking, the dangers, how to protect their children, etc. A full-length documentary is currently being developed for viewing in the U.S. The movie trailer & info on Unseen Stories is below.

Joy & I have committed to helping her see this trip through by way of raising awareness, prayer, & financial support. How can you help? The most practical way to help is to purchase a ticket ($8) for a dinner she is hosting at Camp Living Stones on Thursday, April 30 at 6:00pm. That evening will be a wonderful time to hear more information about human trafficking & the work that exists in taking action against it. We met over at a park at Ingleside School for a good time of playing in the grass, smelling the flowers, playing with "Spunky Monkey," & so much more. Jessica Winn: Bridal Shoot, Part 1 of 2

After 3 reschedules due to rain, I finally had the opportunity to do a bridal session for Jessica Winn. She is so excited to be marrying her man, RJ Lillard, on May 9. And, I am very honored to get to shoot their wedding as well. I can already tell it is going to be a blast!

We had a great time running around downtown Athens & then venturing off to Jessica's future in-laws' home. It turned out to be a wonderful day, although slightly chilly outside, & we were able to capture some great pics. Jessica was so much fun & up for any challenge. And, she kept Alison (my associate photographer) & I in stitches after naming Alison's baby Jalapeno Nation (due in in late '09). I owe a special thanks to Alison & all her tremendous help. A Day at Augusta National

My dad was able to get tickets to the Wednesday practice round of The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club. Myself, dad, Uncle Joe, & my cousin Aaron were able to make the trip. It turned out to be a beautiful day & we had an incredible time. It also revealed to me how out of shape I have gotten since I quit working out a few weeks ago. Enjoy! Saturday I was out in the yard acting quite 'manly' (which I do quite regularly) as I raked & blew leaves when all of a sudden I noticed my little bird friend following me around. I have never been much of a animal/wildlife photographer but I thought I would try my hand at capturing a few images of the 'feathered one.' He/she/it was quite fun; he must've thought I was carrying some kind of bazooka (actually my 70-200 L 2.8 IS lens). But, he allowed me to get close enough to get some good shots. Hope you like! If anyone knows what kind of bird it is (I'm thinking it looks like a mockingbird), I would love to know. I'm not too up-to-date on my ornithology. (I know you are surprised!)

The Bohannons

Sometimes you feel like you are in the sweet spot... and the Bohannons live in the sweet spot. Last night I had the pleasure to shoot the Bohannon Family & it was awesome to visit their home. They have one of the most scenic homes in our area & it was absolutely beautiful. I am privileged to share a few of my favorites with you. Believe me, it was hard to choose; stay tuned for more!

Portrait schedule if you see each other before your ceremony:

2 hours before ceremony: Bride & Groom see each other for the first time & take portraits alone together
1.5 hours before ceremony: Portraits with bridal party
1 hour before ceremony: Portraits with families
1/2 hour before ceremony: Completely done with portraits as your guests begin to arrive--giving you time to go inside & freshen up.

Buck Bald, TN at Sunset

I went up to Buck Bald for the engagement sessions with Bethany & Peter. I managed to capture the sun setting at just the perfect time. After some slight editing, I am extremely pleased with the final image. I am planning on producing a large format print of it for my studio. Hope you enjoy!

Bowling Adventures

Last night we met up with some friends at the Galaxy Lanes to celebrate Jon & Allison's b-days. We had a great time & I took a few action shots. I must admit, this is my first time to take pics at the bowling alley. The kids were so much fun to photograph. Enjoy!

You have got to love those lane bumpers! I think Gretchen is up there coaching the ball towards the 1 pin.

Isn't her hair beautiful! That must've been an amazing bowl.

Laurel was making things happen. I think if Jon would've let her, she could have taken us all down.

My new lens

I am very excited about my recent purchase. Over the last two weeks I was able to sell my two primary lenses: Canon 24-105 f/4 IS L & a Canon 70-200 f/4 L. Some thought I was crazy, but I have a plan. I was able to buy a lens I have wanted for a while, a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L. Plus, I have some money left over to put towards the purchase (in the future) of a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L.

But, I couldn't resist taking a pic or two with my new lens. Tell me what you think!

Finch Christmas '08

This Christmas was an incredible time to share with family. We were blessed with the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time with both Joy's family as well as mine. On Christmas day we had my parents & my sister's family over to our home for lunch. We even started what I hope to be a new tradition for our Christmas meal, it included: grilled filet mignon, salmon, & shrimp, a strawberry/feta/spinach salad, & potato casserole. Here are a few picks from our pics as we opened presents:

Brennan just learned how to do "peek a boo." It is very cute! And, don't you love the sock monkey! It was a gift from his Nana & Papa.

Chase took time to hone his walking skills by pushing a box all around the house. He was able to take 4 steps on his own--it was quite the accomplishment.

Chase was having the time of his life when my mom was swinging him upside down.

Isn't it funny how kids tend to gravitate towards the gifts that other children receive? Here is Brennan riding his cousin Chase's new tractor.
